The Wedding Planning for Dummies is an easy read with plenty of humor and illustrations from the author, which I thought was not only entertaining but rather useful. The book is intentionally written as a reference so I can easily skim through the first time and then go back to the table of contents or index to locate which aspect of wedding planning I wanted more information on. It was pretty thorough from how to tie a bowtie to how to have the wedding cake be a focal point. In each section it was also helpful by its format to help the reader identify the key points, reminders, and tips. I enjoyed the book and felt it was helpful to plan weddings.There are definitely alot of things to consider before putting wedding together and I think this book does a good job in taking something that could be complex be somewhat palatable for a person who has never planned a wedding before. I actually have planned weddings and hope to write a book someday perhaps to plan a wedding on a budget. I hope to add the same humor and enthusiasm as well.

I bought both the Hello Cupcake and What’s new cupcake at the same time.

My daughter and I had great fun making these. While they were time consuming, they got RAVE reviews from the extended family, and the ones we made tasted great!

The Chicks, on the front cover, were delicious! We used lemon mix, with the added ingredients as suggested. We used donut holes, but could only find glazed ones, which made them even sweeter, but still delicious. (my favorite so far!)

We also made the Flamingos, (using strawberry Pocky from the Asian aisle instead of pretzels, which cut down the prep time) Billiard Balls, and the Chrysanthemums, which turned out beautiful.

So far that is all we tried, but it was great fun and we had a lot of laughs along the way. It was great bonding time with my adult daughter. I recommend it to anyone who does not mind spending quality time with someone you love.

Ray Kroc gives an engaging account of his life, including significant insight behind the founding of McDonalds. Kroc is willing to detail both his successes and his mistakes, which allows the reader to truly feel like an ‘insider’. The book is filled with interesting snippets of advice based on these successes or failures that Kroc backs up with anecdotes. He’s a great story teller, and he uses that talent to expound his life philosophy of working hard and getting things done at almost any cost (in his view determination is the most important quality for any successful person to possess).

Kroc seems like a man that in real life folks probably either love or hate – but i think most readers interested in business and even some just interested in good life stories will like this book. He’s willing to be audacious and politically incorrect which is definitely entertaining.

The book’s biggest flaw is that it leaves the reader (or me at least) wanting more insight behind the success and rapid growth of McDonalds in the late 50s and early 60s. It seems like Kroc is really struggling in the mid-late 50s financially with the business and then a few pages later it’s the mid 60s and McDonalds is taking in hundreds of millions. This is one of the central reasons many pick up the book probably – so it is a major flaw. Also, Kroc touches enough on his personal life to make it interesting, but then restrains himself from making it a tell-all, which again leaves the reader wanting more. For example, he hardly mentions his relationship with his daughter or how her death affected his business life.

Overall, this is a worthwhile, inspiring read, filled with great anecdotes and some good advice. It’s amazing what Kroc accomplished, starting McDonalds and risking all at the late age of 52 (late for the ’50s – starting a company today at 52 is not such a big deal). As the back of the book states – Ray Kroc is someone you will never forget – but unfortunately we’re stuck with only 210 pages. He took the other 100 or so with him to the grave.

I got this book from the library and am now going to buy it. I am a beginner/intermediate sewist who likes hip, cool fashionable clothes, and this book gave me so many ideas on new techniques I can incorporate in my basic designs. With that said, I only gave it 4 stars because the project pictures show pretty traditional and outdated clothing ideas. If you can get past the old-fashioned (no offense to those who like that stuff, but I like more current and classy vintage looks–not quilting and 80’s-ish dresses with lace), you will have a treasure-trove of amazing techniques like applique (seems like a million different ways!), ruching, smocking, cording, lacemaking, etc.
The instructions for each technique are clearly presented in a step-by-step manner, with pictures for each step. The layout is not crowded, but spacious so it’s easy to read. Each technique is covered in 2 to 4 pages with a list of supplies and what to set your machine to on the first page.

The pictures of the projects can all be found on Ravelry. Some afghans are challenging whcih I have come to expect from the Berroco design team. Others are easy for all skill levels. Yarns can all be easily substituted. The variety here is pretty amazing and very different from the usual afghan book. Both crocheters and knitters are in for a treat with a total of around 50 patterns. Certainly a bargain.
